Anton Chekhov, Julius West Three Sisters

"Three Sisters" is Anton Chekhov's dramatic play written in 1900 and first performed in 1901. The story concerns the lives of an aristocratic family, the Prozorovs, who struggle to search for meaning in the modern world. The three sisters, Olga, Masha, and Irina, along with their brother Andrei, are living in a small provincial town, yet they long to return to the urban sophistication of Moscow where they grew up. Chekhov's "Three Sisters" brilliantly depicts the lives and aspirations of the Prozorov family as they struggle to contend with the decline of the privileged class in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. A classic of Russian drama, "Three Sisters" is considered one of Chekhov's major works and remains one of his most popular plays.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Julius West The Cherry Orchard

"The Cherry Orchard" was the last play written by Anton Chekhov and is widely regarded as one of his greatest dramatic accomplishments. It is the story of an aristocratic Russian woman and her family who return to their estate, a cherry orchard, to oversee the auction of the estate in order to pay the mortgage. The rise of the middle class and the decline of the aristocracy that was prevalent at the end of the 20th century in Russia, and ultimately led to the Socialistic Revolution, are excellently portrayed in Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard".

Anton Chekhov, Constance Garnett The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories by Fiction, Short Stories, Classics, Literary

An average student, Chekhov reportedly learned far more from his gifted mother, whose compelling stories interested him in storytelling at an early age. Considered the "father" of the modern short story and the modern play, The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories includes early Chekhov stories of note including "Oysters," "Vanka" and the lyrical "A Day in the Country." Translator Constance Garnett was a contemporary of Chekhov's, and while her translations of other nineteenth-century Russian authors have sometimes been faulted, her carefully-chosen translations provide near-contemporary English versions of Chekhov's elegant language and incomparable imagery.

Anton Chekhov, Constance Garnett The Party and Other Stories by Fiction, Short Stories, Classics, Literary

Chekhov bares loves and hates, trivial and monumental, in such miniature masterpieces as "The Party," "The Terror," and "A Misfortune." "Why have I done this?" he kept asking himself in bewilderment and despair, futilely trying to drive the vision of his friend's beautiful wife from his mind. "Why has it turned out like this and not differently? To whom and for what was it necessary that she should love me in earnest?"

Chekhov Anton Plays

Anton Chekhov's popularity in the West is without parallel for a foreign writer. He has been absorbed into our culture, and accepted as one of our own. His plays lend themselves easily to the stage, calling for actors with intelligence and common sense rather than a dramatic voice or histrionic skills. He takes from everyday life themes of frustration which apply to us all - the difficulty of carving out a happy existence, the problems of love, the fading of hope, the universal feeling that time passes and we never quite get things right. This seems pessimistic, and yet Chekhov claimed he was writing comedy. Readers, actors and directors must decide for themselves which way to play these pieces. They are full of sadness, but a sadness described as the 'darkness of the last hour before the dawn'. Whether tragic or comic, however, they are works of the first importance. "The Cherry Orchard" has been described as 'the best play since Shakespeare', "Three Sisters" as 'the best play in the world'.

Anton Chekhov, Constance Garnett The Schoolmaster and Other Stories by Fiction, Classics, Literary, Short

Among the stories is one of Chekhov's classics, "The Bet," in which a greedy banker makes an ill-considered bet regarding capital punishment with a young and impressionable guest. Fifteen years later -- the surprise ending provides one of Chekhov's most thought-provoking tales. The title story is a careful reminder of the soul-deadening life of a teacher in the Russian countryside -- for in Russia of Chekhov's day, education was less-valued than it is today, and teachers greatly underpaid and undervalued. Chekhov was of a different social background than more aristocratic Russian authors such as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Turgenev -- this offered him an insight into character that differed from theirs. A physician as well, Chekhov's observational skills are clear in this, as with all of his collections of short fiction. These stories will remind the reader of other 19th Century masters of short fiction, such as Maupassant. But their nature, and poetic irony, is exclusively that of Anton Chekhov.Included in this volume are "Enemies," "The Schoolmaster," "The Examining Magistrate," "Betrothed," "From the Diary of a Violent-Tempered Man," "In the Dark," "A Play," "A Mystery," "Strong Impressions," "Drunk," "The Marshal's Widow," "A Bad Business," "In the Court," "Boots," "Joy," "Ladies," "A Peculiar Man," "At the Bar...

Chekhov Anton Selected Stories

Anton Chekhov is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of short stories. He constructs stories where action and drama are implied rather than described openly, and which leave much to the reader's imagination. This collection contains some of the most important of his earliest and shortest comic sketches, as well as examples of his great, mature works. Throughout, the doctor-turned-writer displays compassion for human suffering and misfortune, but is always able to see the comical, even farcical aspects of the human condition.
