Paul Bouchard A Catholic Marries a Hindu. Look at Cultural Differences Between Americans and Indians

Two people - Paul, an American, and Latika, an Indian - fall in love and get married in this true East-meets West story entitled A Catholic Marries a Hindu. From language and attitudes to cuisine and hobbies, and from college experiences and career choices to social structure and work settings, this short, matter-of-fact read sheds light on the many cultural differences between the United States and India as seen through Paul's perspective - as seen through American eyes. The true story culminates in the weddings (both Catholic and Hindu) of Latika and Paul - tuxedos, Mass, and a wedding cake on day one are replaced by saris, Sanskrit chants, and coconuts on day two. Educational and informative, A Catholic Marries a Hindu shows us that differences, at times, can unite.

Paul Bouchard Chennai from an A Perspective

In late December 2016, Paul Bouchard and his wife boarded British Airways and headed to Chennai, India, for a five-day visit of her family. After the plane landed in India’s fourth-largest city on Christmas morning, Paul was immediately swept up into a friendly culture where taxis gracefully manuever within heavy traffic, every home has a prayer room, and goats, cows, and dogs roam the streets freely. In a fascinating narrative, Paul chronicles his experiences and observations about life in Chennai including periodic power outages, streets filled with motorcycles and motorscooters, roads without demarcated lanes, and churches dedicated to St. Thomas. From Chennai’s perfectly timed sunrises and sunsets along the shores of the Bay of Bengal, to a memorable road trip that led from the immense city to green pastures and eventually to the historical sites at Mahabalipuram, Paul vividly describes each experience from a Western point of view, providing readers with an unforgettable glimpse into another country and its way of life.Chennai from an American’s Perspective shares a firsthand account of an American lawyer’s trip to a major Indian city during late 2016.

Paul Wilkes In Due Season. A Catholic Life

Praise for In Due Season «Paul Wilkes's memoir is a love story—and also a story of a struggle with the lover, in his case, God. The son of an immigrant, Wilkes felt that he was called to a priestly vocation, indeed a Trappist vocation. God sent him many signals that this was not his calling. So Paul had to settle for what he thought to be a second-best vocation—a very successful writer. God heaved a sigh of relief. Paul had finally 'got it.' He has written a memoir of the century.» —Andrew Greeley, author, The Catholic Imagination «Paul Wilkes is that rarest of people—a deeply spiritual man who is also an absolutely exquisite writer. His absorbing new memoir reveals the wonderful things that can happen when you allow God to lead you along life's often bumpy path—whether or not you know where the journey will lead. This is a beautifully written, frequently haunting, and always fascinating story of seeking and finding, serving and loving, and—ultimately—dying and rising. Highly recommended.» —James Martin, SJ, author, My Life with the Saints «Paul Wilkes's biography takes us through Paul's life, but through the stages of our own lives as well. As a result, at the end of it we can see how we, too, have become more than we ever thought we could be. Wilkes is a great writer–he has a refreshing style, a direct voice, and a stark and unfurbished honesty, even about himself. In Due Season has all the marks of Augustine's Confessions or Merton's Seven Storey Mountain. It gives the rest of us, whatever we've done, wherever we've been, hope. It helps us see the forest of our lives despite the trees. Read this book. It can put the seasons of your own life into better, broader perspective.» —Joan Chittister, author, Called to Question: A Spiritual Memoir Paul Wilkes' In Due Season takes the reader on a moving journey through an extraordinary era's thickets of American Catholic life and belief—opening at last into wisdom, affirmation, and hope. —James Carroll, author, Practicing Catholic and An American Requiem, winner of the National Book Award

The New Politics. Catholic Social Teaching for the Twenty-First Century

For more than a century the Catholic Church has closely scrutinized the economic certainties of capitalism and communism. As a result, it has slowly developed an entirely new position from which today to survey the capitalist leviathan. What this book sets out to do is to chronicle that development and highlight the insights it has formed which have a particular resonance for the world as it enters the . twenty-first century.Michael Walsh describes developments from Rerum Novarum to Vatican II, and Brian Davies the work of John XXIII and Vatican II itself. Julian Filochowski looks at the early social doctrine of Paul VI, and the encyclicals of John Paul II are discussed by Ian Linden, Clifford Langley and Julie Clague. Finally, Paul Vallely looks into the new millennium beyond John Paul II.The book is an important contribution to political and social thought at the beginning of the new millennium. Authoritative, positive and open, its appeal is far from restricted to Catholics or even Christians. Its distinguished contributors offer suggestions for a thought which might combine economic efficiency with social concerns to create a more compassionate community. The tools are there for those with the foresight and courage to take them up.Paul Vallely writes on current social, ethical and political issues for The Independent. He is also the Chair of the Catholic Institute for International Relations and of Traidcraft Exchange.

In 16 chapters, a variety of scholarsexamine these schools across three periods: echoes of the past, realities of the present, and futuredirections. The intention of the editor and authors of this volume is that Catholic schools and those interested inconducting Catholic school research will find guidance, especially in examining newer types ofpartnerships flourishing in different types of Catholic schools in different regions of the country and types of schools from rural, suburban to city andinner-city schools. By increasing the data we have, such studies could help stem the tide of Catholic school demise. In addition, Catholic school leaders, and parents who chose them or are thinking about choosing them, will find here a balanced description of whatconstitutes a Catholic school and how they are different from public schools. Marcelle Bartolo Abela Icons as Resistance. Challenging the New Iconoclasm in Catholic Church

The Western Catholic Church is fast losing her centuries-old sense of the uncreated beauty of God, as manifested through the created beauty of sacred art, by buying into postmodern minimalism for the adornment of new churches. This loss is occurring despite the Church’s longstanding tradition as Patroness of the Arts and the 1999 call of Saint John Paul II for the urgent need to return to “epiphanies of beauty” in Catholic churches worldwide. In the meantime, icons and iconographic frescos that populate Orthodox churches remain much sought after by believers and non-believers alike for their timeless beauty and inescapable sense of the transcendent. Will the People of God be able to resist the new iconoclasm characterized by facelessness in the Western Catholic Church through the triumphant and hidden power of icons? Icons as Resistance: Challenging the New Iconoclasm in the Catholic Church by the Maltese-American Catholic author Marcelle Bartolo-Abela documents a series of engaging conversations about the role that icons have in the Church at large and the role they can play at present in the Roman Catholic Church itself. These conversations were held between the author and a group of traditional Catholics earlier this year.

Tony Lorenzen Saint Somebody Central Catholic

In a world primed to consider them a bunch of nobodies, one teacher sees them all as saints.John Christopher, a married father of two, tells the tale of his rookie year on the faculty one of the oldest and least prestigious Catholic high schools in Boston. It’s the White Shadow meets Joan of Arcadia meets Nothing Sacred at the turn of the millennium in a forgotten little school full of unforgettable students.“There is often more truth in fiction, than in the day to day fragments of reality, and this book makes a Christian journey come alive in fresh and compelling ways. By the time you’re a few paragraphs into this novel, you’ll feel your heart captured by these kids. A few chapters in, and you won’t be able to put the story down. By the end of the book your faith in kids, the community of the Catholic church (at the grassroots level), and the joy and pain of real learning will be tangible and deep. ”—Mary Hess, Assoc. The Gospel of John

The Gospel of John: Theological-Ecumenical Readings brings together leading Catholic, Orthodox, and Evangelical theologians to read and interpret John's Gospel from within their ecclesial tradition, while simultaneously engaging one another in critical dialogue. Combining both theological exegesis and ecumenical dialogue, each chapter is uniquely structured with a main essay by a Catholic, Orthodox, or Evangelical theologian on a section of John's Gospel, followed by two responses from theologians of the other two traditions. The chapter concludes with a final response from the main author. Readers are thus provided with not only a deep and engaging reading of the Gospel of John but also the unfolding of a rich theological-ecumenical dialogue centered on an authority for all Christians, namely, the Gospel of John.""In the eminent contributors he has assembled, the structure of Orthodox-Evangelical-Catholic trialogue, and the focus on the scriptural text, Charles Raith has established a rich paradigm for future ecumenical theology. The exchanges between Root and Bradshaw on the Petrine office and between Behr and Leithart on the Johannine corpus struck me as especially seminal, though the other essays in the volume could easily be singled out as well. Above all, it is Paul Gavrilyuk who encapsulates the tenor of the whole, when he speaks of earnestly seeking insights in other Christian traditions in order to heal and renew one's own tradition. Such humble g...

Roger Buck The Gentle Traditionalist. A Catholic Fairy-tale from Ireland

Geoffrey has a problem. All his life he's lived according to "sensible" sceptical, secular values. Then, his true love left him for a New Age community in Scotland. But it gets worse: now she wants to be a traditional Catholic nun! Geoffrey is bewildered, angry, lost. Until, one Valentine's Day in Ireland, he meets a mysterious guide--the Gentle Traditionalist. Christian Smith, John C. Cavadini Building Catholic Higher Education

American Catholic universities and colleges are wrestling today with how to develop in ways that faithfully serve their mission in Catholic higher education without either secularizing or becoming sectarian. Major challenges are faced when trying to simultaneously build and sustain excellence in undergraduate teaching, strengthen faculty research and publishing, and deepen the authentically Catholic character of education. This book uses the particular case of the University of Notre Dame to raise larger issues, to make substantive proposals, and thus to contribute to a national conversation affecting all Catholic universities and colleges in the United States (and perhaps beyond) today. Its arguments focus particularly on challenging questions around the recruitment, hiring, and formation of faculty in Catholic universities and colleges. In an increasingly secularized culture, where institutions can be tempted to ignore or sideline their Catholic identity, Professors Smith and Cavadini offer a striking, rich, and alternative vision.--Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop, Fort Wayne-South BendFully embracing the ambitious goal of Notre Dame's president to create first-rate undergraduate and graduate programs, all rooted intellectually in Catholicism, Christian Smith spells out why it is very difficult to achieve all three . . . As difficult as it is to reach that goal, Smith suggests a way forward.--James L. Heft, President, Institute for Advanced Catholic StudiesBuilding Catholic Hig...

Serge A. Theriault Msgr. Dominique M. Varlet. Originator of the Old Catholic Episcopal Succession 1678-1742

Dominique M. Varlet (1678-1742) is a great figure in the Independent (Old) Catholic Movement. A composer of commentaries on Scripture, theology, and ecclesiastical abuses he has been a symbol of Christian freedom and church autonomy. He was a parish and missionary priest, bishop, theologian, and church reformer. He is at the origin of the Old Catholic Church and the originator of its episcopate. Bishop Varlet advocated the purification of the Catholic Church and its return to a more authentic Christianity. His theology challenges the authority of the papacy by holding that the Bible is the source of religious authority and that it is the baptized Christians sanctified by the Holy Spirit who give the Church its infallibility. He taught that Christ is personally present through the election of grace. Salvation is experienced by faith in Him, a faith mediated by the whole Church, not exclusively by the clerical establishment or the living magisterium. For Bishop Varlet, justification is relational as well as ontological. The relationship between the believers and the divine Trinity is understood as the growth of Christ-like love in fidelity to the Truth given once for all. These ideas have helped to shape the Old Catholic doctrine.

Robert W. Caruso The Old Catholic Church

The Old Catholic Church aims at informing and inspiring its readers to reflect and entertain the theological richness of the Old Catholic churches of the Union of Utrecht, a Catholic tradition that is unknown and misunderstood by many in North America. Caruso presents much more than a mere history book about Old Catholicism by focusing on its historical origins to better explain the eucharistic nature of the local catholic Church; to which he simultaneously highlights some of the real struggles faced by Independent Old Catholics in North America with regard to this trinitarian and eucharistic understanding of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
